Vietnam Revives Ninh Thuan Nuclear Power Project: A Key Step Toward Net Zero 2050

Vietnam is taking a bold step in its clean energy transition with the revival of the Ninh Thuan nuclear power project, aligning with the nation’s goal of achieving Net Zero by 2050.

On November 30, 2024, the National Assembly approved the continuation of the project, followed by Directive No. 1/CT-TTg from the Prime Minister on January 3, 2025, tasking the Ministry of Industry and Trade with execution within five years. A Steering Committee, led by the Prime Minister, was also established on January 10, 2025, to ensure smooth implementation.

Key Advantages:

  • Strong Policy Support: Backed by the Party and Government, with public consensus.
  • Preselected Sites: Locations in Phuoc Dinh (Ninh Thuan 1) and Vinh Hai (Ninh Thuan 2) meet international standards.
  • Skilled Workforce: Hundreds of trained nuclear experts ready to contribute.
  • Challenges Ahead:

  • Massive Investment: Estimated at $9.6B per plant - cost overruns remain a concern.
  • Tight Timeline: Aiming for a five-year completion, despite Vietnam’s limited experience.
  • Regulatory Gaps: Legal updates, including revisions to the Atomic Energy Law, are needed.
  • Human Resource Development: More investment in nuclear education and training is crucial.

This marks a historic milestone in Vietnam’s energy sector, offering both opportunities and challenges. As the country embarks on its first-ever nuclear power project, global collaboration, regulatory improvements, and skilled workforce development will be critical to its success.

Vietnam's Pharmaceutical Strategy: Aiming for ASEAN Leadership by 2030

The Ministry of Health recently introduced the National Pharmaceutical Development Strategy, with a target for 2030 and a vision for 2045. This strategy focuses on prioritizing domestic pharmaceutical companies and manufacturers with production facilities in Vietnam, aiming to increase self-sufficiency and reduce reliance on imports.

Key elements of Vietnam's pharmaceutical strategy include:

  • Development of the domestic pharmaceutical industry: Emphasizing the production of originator drugs, new drug formulations, and biological drugs, with the goal of reaching level 4 according to WHO standards.
  • Enhancing production capacity: Elevating the pharmaceutical sector to match advanced countries, establishing Vietnam as a hub for the production and technology transfer of originator drugs within ASEAN.
  • Expanding the pharmaceutical sector's role: Moving beyond product supply to include involvement in healthcare services and clinical pharmacy.
  • Building a digital health ecosystem: Developing a platform for monitoring and optimizing drug use, ensuring traceability and quality control.

While this strategy supports the growth of domestic companies, could it create long-term challenges for imported products? How can we balance fostering domestic growth with embracing global innovation in the pharmaceutical sector?

Vietnam's Growing Economy Faces a Skilled Labor Crunch

Some of the main sectors such as e-commerce, logistics and warehousing, even entry-level positions such as drivers and warehouse workers struggle to fill due to a lack of skilled workers.

Việc Làm Tốt's data reveals that while there's a 30% surge in recruitment demand this year, industries such as e-commerce and logistics are grappling with a significant shortage of skilled workers, even for basic roles like drivers and warehouse staff.

The labor market imbalance is creating challenges for both employers and employees. Businesses are struggling with staffing shortages, while workers find it difficult to secure suitable jobs. The root cause lies in the slow adaptation of training programs to meet evolving market demands. To address this, a comprehensive approach is needed, involving reforming training programs, enhancing vocational education, and fostering greater business involvement in training.

Talent acquisition is becoming increasingly challenging for businesses. The intense competition for top talent, coupled with evolving workforce expectations, has created new hurdles for recruiters. Beyond salary and benefits, companies must cultivate a strong employer brand and foster an engaging, flexible work environment to attract and retain top talent.
