Vietnam has strong potential to become a regional hub for clinical trials

Vietnam has strong potential to become a regional hub for clinical trials if key challenges are addressed through strategic reforms, according to the “Roadmap to the Future of Clinical Trials in Vietnam” report launched by Pharma Group.

Opportunities:

• 100M+ diverse population ideal for researching complex diseases (e.g., cancer, cardiovascular, infectious)

• 95% universal health insurance coverage

• Strong government commitment to R&D: 2% of GDP allocated via Resolution 57-NQ/TW

• Growing appeal to global pharmaceutical companies and CROs due to an improving business environment

Challenges:

• Lengthy, multi-step approval process (up to 12 months)

• Limited infrastructure - only 40 GCP-certified sites nationwide

• Shortage of specialized clinical research professionals

• Lack of structured funding and weak investment incentives

To become a leading clinical trial hub in the region, Vietnam must implement an integrated strategy that combines regulatory reform, infrastructure development, workforce training, and stronger investment policies.
